Services and Fees
What do you get for $1.50 a page (the cheapest price around)?
- You get a complete manuscript critique in a critique letter. This letter assesses plot, pacing, characterization, dramatized conflict, mechanics, and possible market venues for your work. The letter usually runs between 1200 to 1500 words.
- You get line edits on your hard copy, dealing with mechanics: grammar, punctuation, spelling and the like. I also include a list of standard proofreader's marks to help you decipher this feature of the critique.
- I take page notes as I read the manuscript and type these up. They usually come to 500 to 1000 words.
- You will receive your critique in the SASE envelope you sent me.
- Your manuscript will be read and critiqued in the order it is received. There is usually a turn-around time of 4 to 6 weeks.
Fees:
- The fee for a Mad about Books critique is $1.50 per page of manuscript, excluding your title page.
- You must present a personal check, money order, or cashier's check with your manuscript submission. I am not set up to accept credit cards.
- I will wait for personal checks to clear my bank before working on a project.
Please note:
- I mainly work on adult fiction manuscripts. Occasionally I accept non-fiction work. Email me first about non-fiction submissions.
- I will not contact an agent or a publisher for you. I can, however, make suggestions as to possible venues for your work.
- I do not work on manuscripts written for an academic grade, such as theses or term papers.
- I do not work on illustrated books, children's books, or poetry. I do accept Young Adult manuscripts.
- At present, I do not offer tiers of editing services. Every complete manuscript I undertake receives the same services listed above.
